I am Chisom Utibe Akah aka Jenny Chisom.
In 2007, in Abuja Nigeria, I worked at a media company as an editor. I had grown to edit their serial magazine on business and TV. Subsequently, I grew to become a consultant and trainer, and registered my own business as a book editor.
My quest to be a book editor began as early as when I was 7 years old; that was when I began to read the bible fluently and I read Derek Llewellyn-Jones’s “Every Woman” at 9 years old. I am that kind of voracious reader till date. So, it was not long before I began discovering that some books, especially books by African authors, were ridden with errors.
I insisted until I got admission to study my dream course - English Language and Literary Studies at the University, and while there, I also found that many of our recommended textbooks authored by our very own lecturers were ridden with avoidable errors, especially typographical ones. That sparked my hunger to do something about editing services. I desperately wanted to see our African stories, academic and non-fiction books preserved and meet international standards.
Hence, I began to edit and proofread books and other materials for my course mates, friends, and individuals who knew my knack for correcting errors. I was so happy helping them to correct and publish their writings. All these I did for FREE.
However, I began editing as a business in 2009, and registered it formally as a business in 2010. Since my first paid job of over 60, 000 words (a drama) till now, I have edited books in genres such as Children’s fiction, Thriller fiction, Self-help/motivational books, (Auto) biographies, memoirs, personal brand books and Academic/tutorial books for over 500 clients. I have also helped over 13 first-time authors to self-publish their books with class, providing full-option services for them, including digital book marketing.
My work has won me multiple awards as a personal brand and the first time this course was sold in 2018, it was without a formal launch, yet, the 3 alumni are experts in the editorial industry in Nigeria today. In March 2022, it was relaunched and 7 more editors who graduated on June 19, 2022 are contributing generously to the publishing landscape.
